If not, email info@sudandivestment.org and start your own campaign! What is Divestment? Divestment is the act of withdrawing investments in certain companies based on social and moral reasons. A number of institutions, companies, and states are invested in several different Sudanese based oil companies. These companies are an integral part in the Sudanese economy and have a strong influence over the Sudanese government. The revenue they generate is only seen by the government and not by the civilians who are being exterminated. By taking out investments from these companies, the share price falls and causes the company to either pull out of Sudan or pressure the Sudanese government to stop the genocide. Divestment is an indirect way of causing very effective results. Divestment FAQ Does it Hurt the Victims? No. The companies targeted are oil companies based in Sudan whose revenue is only seen by the government. The government uses this money to buy weapons and pay their soldiers and the Janjaweed to attack the Black African villages. By divesting from these companies, we are only affecting the part of the economy that benefits the government. Why Target the Companies? By one institution divesting, the share price will not drop low enough for the companies to really be financially affected. However, many divestments together will substantially hurt the company. Its the THREAT of that happening that will cause these companies to take action. Each time another institution divests, this threat becomes all the more credible, and the consequences all the more real. Will it Work? Yes. Already two companies have pulled out of Sudan. ABB of Switzerland has suspended activity in Sudan and Siemens of Germany has issued a commitment to pull out of Sudan. This is a direct result from US Divestment. |
